This is a historically important and Very RARE Antique 19th c. American Folk Art Primitive Pig Weathervane, acquired from a private antique collection in Los Angeles, California. From my research, I have discovered that original antique turn of the century pig or hog weathervanes are exceedingly rare and have historically only been produced in the American Northeast. Don’t be fooled by replicas you will see for sale online; this is a real 100+ year old authentic figural weathervane. This piece likely dates from the 1880’s – 1910’s. The pig is wonderfully rendered in copper, with an honest old verdigris patina throughout. Approximately 15 inches tall x 28 inches wide. Good condition for age, with obvious patination, wear, slightly bent ears, etc. At some point decades ago, this item was converted into a wall hanging and a chain was added. This chain itself has oxidation from age. This sculptural weathervane is priced to sell and would be an important addition to any antique weathervane or American Folk Art collection.
